REIMAGINING CENTRAL EUROPEAN CITIES AS THRIVING HABITATS
Wild This, Wild That explores how Central European cities can bring more nature back into urban life. Focusing on Ostrava, Pécs, Gdańsk, and Prešov—with Uzhhorod as a collaborative partner—the project examines the social, cultural, and ecological dimensions of urban rewilding. By uniting universities, municipalities, NGOs, and community voices, it develops practical tools, workshops, and a toolkit to help cities reconnect with nature, strengthen sustainability, and build resilience.
Rewilding in cities is not just about planting more trees or expanding green areas—it is about restoring ecological processes and redefining the relationship between people and nature. This means creating habitats for wildlife, designing multifunctional landscapes that improve well-being, and supporting policies that integrate biodiversity into everyday urban life. By looking at rewilding as both an ecological and social project, Wild This, Wild That highlights the potential for cities to become healthier, more adaptive, and more inclusive spaces.
The project also emphasizes collaboration across borders. By comparing experiences in the V4 region and integrating the unique perspective of Uzhhorod, it seeks to uncover shared challenges and innovative solutions. Each city brings its own history, geography, and community values to the table, making the exchange of ideas a powerful driver for collective learning. Together, these insights will inform practical guidelines and tools that can be applied not only in Central Europe, but also in cities worldwide seeking to reimagine their futures as thriving habitats for both people and nature.
